The objective of the Institute for Translational Neuroscience is to develop novel therapeutics for alcoholism and substance use disorders and for comorbid disorders including stress, anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
Our program goals include the identification of medications to stabilize or mitigate substance use disorders, both when presenting with and without comorbid psychological and neurological conditions. If successful, these medications would significantly decrease the cost of substance use disorders to the military and would facilitate redeployment and continued service of significant numbers of personnel. Importantly, pharmacotherapeutic interventions may be useful directly and immediately in combat arenas where longer-term cognitive and behavioral interventions are not feasible.
